The Museums of the Bethel Historical Society

Founded in 1966 at Bethel, Maine, the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society collects, preserves, displays, and shares the history of western Maine and the White Mountain Region of New Hampshire and Maine through exhibits, lectures, events, and publications.

Our Publications

The Saddlebag

The Saddlebag provides monthly(ish) e-news updates from the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society and notifications about upcoming programs and events. It is named for the saddlebags which carried the first mail to Bethel. The saddlebags are now part of our collection and are on display at the Dr. Moses and Agnes Straw Mason House.

The Courier

The Courier is the newsletter of the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society. It has been published in print since 1976, and currently appears semiannually in the spring and fall. It is named after Bethel’s earliest newspaper, the Bethel Courier, which was published from 1858-1861.

Goose Eye

Goose Eye: A Journal of Western Maine and White Mountain History was launched in 2021 to provide a place for more longform and scholarly articles. The print journal is mailed once per year in late spring to Museums of the Bethel Historical Society members and supporters. It is named for Goose Eye Mountain in Riley Township, Maine.
